Sussy Hollaway Counselling Play Therapy

Hi, I'm Sussy Hollaway.  I am an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and Play Therapist

I'm a trauma informed mental health practitioner and provide counselling and advocacy services to children, adolescents, adults, and their families.

I have vast experience working with people on the whole continuum of mental health concerns. I support people who have experienced trauma, sexual assault, drugs and alcohol, life transitions, suicidal and self-harm thoughts and behaviours, and family and relationship issues; including domestic and family violence concerns and adjusting to parenthood. I embrace a neurodiversity affirming perspective that is client-centred and ecological in nature.   This means that I place the person and families at the centre of treatment with the understanding that their thoughts, feelings, emotions, and body are all affected by the different systems that surround them and that each person has their own unique and beautiful way of being in the world. I explore the layers of their life and get creative with strategies including movement, creative arts, play, meditation and mindfulness. I provide a safe space for people and their families to get curious, practice compassion and to move forward in their healing journey so that they can achieve their goals.

I have spent more than 20 years working in the community and welfare sector, including working with people with serious and complex mental health needs. Some theoretical frameworks that guide and inform my practice include Cognitive therapies (DBT and ACT), Polyvagal Theory, Internal Family Systems, Mindfulness and Meditation practices, Attachment Theory and Somatic practices.  I take pride in building connected collaborative relationships with the people and families I see. I support them to feel safe, connected and assist in creating sustainable change that helps people ground and re-centre themselves.  I also work at Paeds in a Pod, Woolloongabba, a paediatric specialist clinic supporting children, young people and families.

Outside of my work I have a family and two children, one of which has had his own complex medical start in life. I love to read and hang out and play with family and friends. I have a daily meditation practice, have several well-established self-care routines and always seek to learn and grow my knowledge. I have regular supervision and attend ongoing relevant training to keep up to date with current evidence-based practices.
